The Family Piano

At home, we have a upright piano in our living room that is very old. I'm pretty positive it is the oldest thing on our house by a long shot. And it has the nicks and bumps to prove it. This being said, it has always been apart of the family.

It's only use

And because it has been here so long, it has become the best and worst convenience for my mother. It does not get played very often so it became a place holder for other knickknacks like photographs, plants, a stereo, holiday decorations, family games.. and so on and so forth. Even these last two years it gained a place to hold pandemic mask.

Now you may be saying, "Sydney, how is it inconvenient?" Well, let me ask you, do you have any idea how heavy pianos are? Especially old pianos. They are HEAVY!
Anytime my mom feels like rearrange the living room she always wants to move the piano as well. Moving it is a 3 person job and you have to do it as carefully you can.
They are pretty fragile for something that is so heavy and sturdy.

When I was really little, my mother forced me into piano classes. I could not tell you much about the experience besides the fact that all of our song were on a CD disk for us to listen to and there was this one song that scared and shook me to my core. But that's beside the point.

The point is, I was in piano for awhile. I remember I had a piano recital. And after that recital, I don't remember playing the piano again, I even stopped going to class.

Music has always been a big part of my life though, I was always sing, and when I stopped singing, I would learn to play the clarinet. When I got into college, I discovered that majority of the students play more than one instrument. Wanting to fit in, I tried to pick up piano.

A Story in Time

My mother noticed my attempt to relearn the piano. She asked me if I knew anything about this piano. I looked at her confused and told her no. This was the story that changed everything for me.

My mom began to tell me that this piano is Lela's piano. Lela is my great grandma who passed away in 2003. In the photo to the right is my grandpa and my great grandma ( his mom )

Lela told my mother that she loved when we would come over because Sydney would play her piano and play it so nice and gently. None of the other grand or great grand children played it with such care; they would always bang on it and be loud. This being said, she told my mother that before she passes she would like to see me play piano in a professional setting.

So my mom put me in piano lessons.

So I could play for my great grandma. I found out that day to that she was there, she went to my recital. If I really think back on it hard I remember being excited for that day. I can see a figure in the crowd of people in the seats, but that's it.

My mom proceeds to tell me how happy and proud Lela was for me. She told me that great grandma put in her will that her piano was for me. And the piano has been sitting here ever sense.

There's a Truth that can't be Spoken

This story has planted a seed inside of me. I learned that day how much my great grandma loved me. I also learned two things that day.

I learned that I have not taken care of my inheritance. Not once has the piano been tuned, wiped down, or cleaned. With all of the clutter on it, you would have thought it was a storage shelf. I feel like I have failed my great grandma and I know she is sad I have not playing.

I also learned that even though my parents know this, it hasn't stopped them from using it as a convenient place to store items. And they haven't done anything to care for it either.

Even today, it's only use is for gathering dust. And after all this time, I'm grateful it's still here.

My mom tells me all the time that she can't wait till I move out so I can take this piano with me.

I use to complain about thing because it is such a heavy burden.

I never got to relearn the piano, but I like to play it even with its out of tune notes.
